This week’s article: It is not important How we come to the events in our lives, but how we Deal with those events.
Once I landed in prison it did not matter how I got there. I was where I was and there was nothing I could do about that. We can look at our past, we can reflect on it and we can learn from it but we never ever want to dwell on it and just as importantly we cannot let our past be a hindurance to our future. If we failed at something in the past does not mean that we cannot accomplish it in the future. When I bring up this point to audience members when speaking I tell them that I did not share the story of my earning two college degrees while incarcerated (both with a 4.0 GPA and placement on the Deans and President's List) as a venue to brag or to boast, but that I share that with them to help them realize that if such a thing could be accomplished within the harsh and violent confines of a Federal Prison then absolutely anything they want to accomplish out here in the free world with all the resources that we have at our disposal can be accomplished.
And just to drive home the point that it does not matter how we come to the events in our lives but how we deal with those events, how you move forward from where you are at today- I want to share a story with you about two brothers who come from the very same event but end up in such completely different places.
From Australia comes a story of two brothers caught stealing sheep. The penalty for the crime was fierce. A brand of the letters “ST” was seared into each one's forehead, forever marking them as “Sheep Thieves.”
For one brother the humiliation was overwhelming. Sneaking from town to town, he became crafty and cruel. Yet he could never get away from himself, and finally he died under suspicious circumstances after years of inner torment.
The other brother decided he had to face this crisis or be destroyed by. He chose to earn back his self-respect. He began each day with the question “What can I do today to earn back my self respect?”
As years unfolded, people began to trust him, and his past crime became a forgotten story on old newsprint. As he aged, he became a respected leader of the community, a friend of those who struggled, and an example of courage for the young.
Many years later a visitor came to town. He was surprised when he saw an old man shuffling past a store with the letters “ST” branded on his forehead. So he asked the clerk, “Who’s that man? What's that all about?” The clerk said, “He used to be the mayor here. There was some story about how he got those scars on his forehead, but I can’t remember what it was. I think it has to do with him being a saint.”

(Please note that my opinions in this section are just that- my opinions. Feel free to disagree with them, argue them or dismiss them. As a professional speaker and author, I find that from time to time I offend or upset people. To this I say that I better be offending some people, otherwise I am not doing my job. By making people look at things they are not always comfortable looking at, I expect to ruffle some feathers and welcome your feedback at any time)
