This week’s article: Why we must see changes in our criminal justice system...

Let me first start by saying that I believe that our criminal justice system is the finest in the world, not perfect but it has no rivals worldwide. I broke the laws of our society and deserved to be incarcerated. Where the problem lies is in the fact that our prisons have become completely about incarceration and almost nothing about rehabilitation.

I met many genuinely good men while incarcerated who simply made one mistake- lost their job, house was about to be foreclosed on, had kids to feed and simply made the mistake of introducing one individual to another and the next thing you know they are caught up in a drug conspiracy and receive a mandatory minimum thirty year sentence...good, decent family men who made one mistake.

Here is where the problem begins- what do you do with this individual for the next 25 years? Do you allow the system to turn him into an animal who is destined to commit further crimes upon his release and start the revolving door? Or do you educate this individual or teach him a trade and make him a productive member of society once again?

It cost $35,000.00 per year to house an inmate (and this is a conservative figure). It would cost a fraction of that to educate that same inmate. I have seen studies that show where inmates who are released with just a two year degree, an associates degree, have a re-arrest rate of just 10%. Compare this to the inmate that comes out with no college or trade and their re-arrest rate is over 60%. Do the numbers, it just makes sense.

Why is this occurring? Mainly because of budget cuts that force the prisons to use what little money they do receive in the areas of security, staffing, training, etc. No vocational programs, no college classes- no chance for these inmates to succeed. What we as a society need to see is the big picture- the money that we are spending to incarcerate is in no way helping to rehabilitate.

Of course I can see where the public opinion is generated. We see splashed all over our TV screens and newspapers these hideous crimes that our being committed and are forming a "lock them up and throw away the key" mentality. Here in Phoenix we had a guy not to long ago who took his four year old daughter out into the desert, doused her with gasoline and lit her on fire. People are seeing these things and are assuming that all those incarcerated are these monsters. Believe me, I met many individuals who need to be locked away forever, have no business ever being on the streets again. But I also met many more who were genuinely good people who made a mistake.

Me earning two college degrees while incarcerated is not the norm. The system did not assist in that, and I was very lucky that certain doors were opened up for me and certain people took a chance on me. It should not be that hard for a person who wants to turn their life around and once again become a productive member of society.

Do the math, it is only going to get worse if the system does not make it better.

(Please note that my opinions in this section are just that- my opinions. Feel free to disagree with them, argue them or dismiss them. As a professional speaker and author, I find that from time to time I offend or upset people. To this I say that I better be offending some people, otherwise I am not doing my job. By making people look at things they are not always comfortable looking at, I expect to ruffle some feathers and welcome your feedback at any time)
