Troy Evans Newsletter Archive: 12/2004 IN THIS ISSUE
“It is not important How we come to the events in our lives, but how we Deal with those events”- Troy Feel free to forward this issue to friends, family and associates! For those of you who have heard me deliver a keynote, you know that part of my program consists of me sharing that I was released five years earlier than my projected release date. I will not go into the long and boring (although it was certainly not boring to me at the time!) details of why this happened, but I do want to share with you the experience I had with my son following this early release. When my family and I discovered that I would be released five years early we kept this bit of news from my son Eric. My release date happened to be thirteen days before Christmas of that year and my folks quicly made arrangements for Eric to come spend Christmas vacation with them. This did not raise any "red flags" for Eric as he had been doing this for the past seven and one-half years- he simply was coming to spend the holiday with Grandma and Grandpa once again. My mother, father, brother, sister and I all piled in a car and headed for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to meet my sons arriving flight from Iowa. My brother and I stayed four gates back from Eric's arrival gate (me on one side of the walkway with a hat and sunglasses on and my brother on the other side videotapping the whole event) while my parents and sister went to his gate to greet him. After the standard hugs and kisses they started to walk my direction and as they did I stepped away from the wall and headed towards them. When they got near me I stepped in front of them and asked, 'excuse me, can someone tell me what time it is please'? I could see out of the corner of my eye that my sons eyes were as big as saucers and that his mouth was wide open. My mom said "it is seven o'clock" and I said ' thank you' and continued to walk away from them. After only a few feet I heard behind me my boys voice quitely saying, "that was my Daddy" My Dad said, "no Eric, that is not your Dad, you know that your Dad is in prison." My son quickly shot back, "I am telling you Grandpa that was my Daddy and you go get him right now". Of course that was all I could take and I ran back to him for hugs, kisses and crying. I completely blew the little guy out of the water- the first time I had ever known my son to be speechless. During this holiday season let us remember that it is not what we have in our lives but who, and let's be certain that we are spending the most time with what is most important.
